Baseball Hosts Presbyterian Tuesday Night

  • South Carolina ends its four-game homestand on Tuesday night (March 26) as the Gamecocks welcome Presbyterian to Founders Park.
  • First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday’s game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus with Dave Weinstein and Grayson Greiner on the call.
  • Tuesday’s game also will be on the Gamecock Sports Network presented by Learfield with Derek Scott and Stuart Lake on the call.

SCOUTING PRESBYTERIAN

  • Presbyterian comes in at 11-13 and won 2-of-3 games to Longwood this past weekend.
  • Brody Fahr had four hits in PC’s 6-2 win over the Lancers in the middle game of the series.
  • Fahr is hitting .395 with 18 RBI while Joel Dragoo leads the Blue Hose with a .423 average, seven home runs and 34 RBI.
  • Charlie McDaniel is 3-0 on the mound with a 1.78 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 35.1 innings pitched.
  • Elton Pollock is in his 20th season at Presbyterian. He guided the Blue Hose to an NCAA Regional in 2021.

SERIES VS. PRESBYTERIAN

  • Carolina holds a 49-21 series advantage on Presbyterian heading into Tuesday’s game.
  • Carolina won last year’s meeting with Presbyterian, 5-0, as Eli Jones struck out six in four innings of relief and Ethan Petry had three hits in the win.

GAMECOCKS LEAD THE NATION IN WALKS

  • Carolina has drawn 187 walks in 24 games this season, which leads the country in free passes. The Gamecocks lead second place Texas A&M by 11 walks.
  • Ethan Petry leads the team with 26 walks, which is tied for the lead in the SEC.
  • The Gamecocks walked 18 times in the 22-6 win over Longwood on March 10. It’s the most dating back to 2005 (first year of game-by-game stats available).
  • Carolina is averaging 7.79 walks per game.

GAMECOCK ARMS IMPRESS IN FIRST 24

  • The South Carolina pitching staff has a 2.96 ERA after 24 games, good for third in the  SEC and the NCAA.
  • The Gamecocks have struck out 234 batters in 203.2 innings, led by 29 punchouts from Tyler Pitzer.
  • The Gamecock opponents are hitting just .199, led by Dylan Eskew’s .184 opponent’s batting average. Garrett Gainey has a .087 opponent’s batting average in 14 innings.
  • Eli Jones has a 2.35 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched.
  • Pitzer is 4-0 with a 0.48 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched.
  • The Gamecocks are third in the NCAA in hits allowed per nine innings (6.63) and are fifth in team WHIP (1.13).

PETRY: 30 FOR 3(3)

  • Sophomore Ethan Petry hit a pair of home runs in the 8-3 win over Vanderbilt which was his 32nd and 33rd career round trippers.
  • Petry is now tied for 15th place on Carolina’s all-time home runs list and is the 29th Gamecock to hit 30 or more home runs in a career.
  • The last player to achieve that feat was Braylen Wimmer (2020-23), who had 32 career home runs. Wes Clarke (2019-21) also had 32 home runs in his Gamecock career.
  • Petry currently is tied with Jim Curl (1978-81) and Trey Dyson (1999-02) for 15th place.
  • Petry also has reached base in all 24 games this season. Combine that with reaching in the last 10 games of 2023, Petry currently has a 34-game reached base streak.

PITZER NAMED SEC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

  • Freshman Tyler Pitzer earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors on March 25.
  • Pitzer worked 8.1 innings in two games, striking out 11 and allowing three hits, no earned runs with two walks and 11 strikeouts.
  • Pitzer made his first start as a collegian against Vanderbilt on March 24 and he struck out nine and did not allow an earned run in the 10-2 win.
  • He retired the first 10 Commodores and earned 1-2-3 innings in the first, second, third and sixth frames.
  • Pitzer is 4-0 on the year with a 0.48 ERA and a team best 29 strikeouts.

GAMECOCKS SWEEP VANDY

  • South Carolina swept Vanderbilt in a three-game SEC series on March 23-24.
  • Carolina outscored Vandy 26-9 and hit seven home runs to Vanderbilt’s one.
  • The pitching held the Commodores to a 2.00 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched.
  • Ethan Petry was 4-for-8 with two home runs, six RBI and five walks in the three wins.
  • Garrett Gainey earned save in both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, striking out four in 2.2 innings.
  • Tyler Pitzer struck out nine and allowed just three hits in 6.1 innings in Sunday’s win.
  • Eli Jones retired the first 18 hitters in a no decision in game one on Saturday.
  • Carolina neutralized the Vanderbilt running game, allowing only two stolen bases in three games, while stealing five bases, two from Dylan Brewer and Blake Jackson.
