Shay is well known for her track and field accomplishments at USC. During the 2005 indoor season, Shay won the 800m title at the Tyson Invite in Fayetteville, Ark. to claim her only win of the season with a time of 2:09.19. During the outdoor season, Shay ran the best 800m of her career at the SEC Championship. After a third place finish in the preliminaries with a time of 2:07.14, Shay returned to the final to run a personal best and regional qualifying time of 2:06.30. Shay's fourth place finish was a major contribution to the Gamecocks' SEC Championship title. Shay qualified for the NCAA East Regional in New York, where she advanced to the final in the 800m run.

In cross country, Shay was one of the Gamecocks' top seven runners. Her season best of 19.47 came during the upset of state archrival Clemson on their home turf. During the 2003-04 season, Shay qualified for the 800m at NCAA Regional and made it to the finals of the event. She was also a member of USC's Distance Medley Relay Team that took 4th at the SEC Championship.

In high school, Shay was the 2002 National Champion in the 800m at the USATF Junior Championships and was runner up in 2001. Shay was also a team captain and two-time MVP in cross country, while also lettering in three different sports: basketball, soccer, and track. Shay, born Dec.26, 1984 in Jackson, Miss. is the daughter of Jonathan and Gwendolyn Shelton. Shay chose USC over Texas Tech, Texas, Stanford, and Kansas State.
