Zimmer finishes 39th to lead the way

Newcomb enters her second season with the Gamecocks. Last indoor season, she was able to better her time in the 3K and hopes to really focus on the 5K and improve her time this year. She trained well this summer and has high expectations to do well and improve this cross country season.
Newcomb attended Toms River High School North in Toms River, N.J., where she received 12 varsity letters as a cross country and indoor and outdoor track athlete. Her team was the 2007 and 2008 South Jersey State Sectional Champions in cross country. Her cross country team won several championships including the Group Four Championships in 2007, the Shore Conference Championships in 2009, the South Jersey Group Four Championships for three straight years, the Ocean County Championships in 2008 and 2009 and the Class A South Cross Country Champions in 2008. She helped lead her indoor track team to an Ocean Country Championship in 2008 and 2009. She received the Ocean County Sportsmanship of the Year Award in 2010. For her team she received the Most Improved Award in 2007, the Most Dedicated Award in 2008 and the Most Valuable Runner in 2009. Newcomb was selected to the cross country All-Shore third team and the All-County second team in 2008 and was named All-County in 2010. She was named Most Dedicated on her indoor and outdoor track teams in 2010. Her 5K best is 18:55, 3,200 is 11:39 and 1,600 is 5:21.
During the summer, Newcomb lifeguards in Seaside Park Beach, N.J. She also competes in triathlons and has placed in the few that she has competed in. Her parents are James and Diane Newcomb. She has one sister, Jenna, who graduated from the University of Notre Dame and just recently got her MBA at Notre Dame as well.
