Woodrow Scholar

During the 2012 outdoor track and field season, Lampe significantly improved her PR for the 5,000-meter run. As a freshman she was selected to compete in the 5K at the prestigious Penn Relays and ran a time of 17:05. She also competed in the 5K at the SEC Championships and placed 8th in the event, scoring one point for the Gamecocks. She broke the 17-minute barrier with a personal best of 16:55, making her the fastest freshman in South Carolina history for the event. This was also the third fastest 5K time in South Carolina history.

Before running for South Carolina, Kayla was an eight-time varsity letter athlete in high school for track and cross country. Her best times were 18:28 for the 5K in cross country and 11:18 for the 3,200-meter run. She was a PIAA state qualifier three years in cross country and in 2009, as a junior, finished 14th at the Pennsylvania state championships. Kayla was also a two-year captain in cross country and a one-year captain in track.
