Gamecocks Set To Host Gamecock Invitational To Open 2012 Season

Carolina to race Friday at 7 p.m. at Hilton Field in Fort Jackson

Higgins comes to South Carolina from Niskayuna, N.Y. During her high school career at Niskayuna, she participated in indoor track, outdoor track and soccer. She was a member of the New York State indoor track All-State team in 2011 and 2012 and was a participant in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in 2010 and 2012. She also competed at the Nike Indoor Nationals in 2010 and the New Balance Indoor Nationals in 2012. Higgins placed fourth in the 600-meter run in the New York State meet in 2011 as well as placing first in the intersectional medley relay running the 600 at the New York State meet in 2012. She has best times of 4:47 in the 1,500-meter run and 2:12 in the 800-meter run.

Higgins was awarded MVP during her sophomore, junior and senior years. She was awarded the Dunkin Donuts Regional Scholar-Athlete award in 2012 as well as the Lynn Cleveland Track and Field Award for outstanding effort in track and field. She received the Swarthmore College book award in 2011 for the top five percent of her class as well as being awarded the Coaches Award and Warrior Award during the 2011 varsity soccer season. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was awarded the senior award in the Math and Language department in her school. She volunteers during the summer at the local Regional Food Bank and graduated with High Honors. She is hoping for a very successful cross country and track season her freshman year.
