South Carolina Captures Commissioner's Cup at Second Annual SEC Coaches Beach Volleyball Championships
April 18, 2009
SIESTA KEY, Fla. - The South Carolina Gamecocks won the Commissioner's Cup at the second annual SEC Coaches Beach Volleyball Championships on the beaches near Sarasota, Fla.
The Gamecocks were powered by a win in the silver bracket by rising seniors Bridget Denson-Dorman and Ivana Kujundzic. The pairing of South Carolina's two returning honorable mention AVCA All-South Region players won all six of their sets in the pool play portion before cruising to the finals and defeating Georgia's tandem of Kathleen Gates and Valentina Gonzalez, 21-12, to capture the crown.
The silver bracket also saw the Garnet and Black's Megan Laughlin and Lindsey Roy advance to the semifinals. They won four of six sets in the pool portion and won their first two rounds in the bracket before falling to their teammates in the semifinals.
South Carolina also had a strong showing in the gold bracket, as Hannah Lawing and Jordan Bradosky, who nearly won the top tourney last year, won six of eight sets in their pool. In bracket play, they sailed past Carla Tietz and Erika Clark of Georgia before downing Kentucky's Sarah Rumely and Sarah Mendoza in the semifinals. Bradosky and Lawing fought hard in the finals but fell, 21-19, to Tennessee's Kylie Marshall and Nikki Fowler.
In the Collegiate Volleyball Beach Challenge portion of the Fiesta on Siesta Key event that included the SEC tourney, the University of South Florida Bulls claimed the team cup over the rest of the field, which consisted of mostly other Florida schools.
This concludes South Carolina's spring season workouts, with the traditional season starting back in late August.
