As Trina Smith enters her eighth season with the Gamecocks, she has evolved into one of the most dedicated and talented assistant coaches in the game. Prior to coming to Carolina, she worked at St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif.
Among her responsibilities, Smith oversees the team's academic progress, is the recruiting coordinator, coaches the middle blockers, plans team travel and coordinates equipment. Smith also worked as a club coach for the Irmo Juniors club program in 1999.
While at St. Mary's, Smith worked as the interim head coach in the Spring of 1996. She also was the head coach of the LaMorinda Club Juniors, a club team in Moraga.
Prior to coaching at St. Mary's, Smith coached a year at Catalina High School. She also coached Club Cactus Juniors, a club team in Tucson, Ariz. Former Gamecocks Shani Abshier and Crystal Moore both played for Club Cactus.
Smith, 31, graduated from the University of Arizona in 1994, with a degree in communications. A middle blocker, Smith lettered four years in volleyball and three years as a small forward in basketball.
In 1999, Smith was named to the Pacific 10's All Decade team. During her playing days Smith was selected to the Pac-10 All-Freshman volleyball team and finished her career ranked among the top 10 in solo blocks, block assists and digs at Arizona.
In 1993, Smith's Arizona team was the first team in Pac-10 history to defeat both UCLA and Stanford in the same season. Smith made two trips to the NCAA Tournament, making the NCAA West Regional finals in 1993. The Wildcats finished the season ranked No. 16 her senior year.
A native of Maywood, Ill., Smith attended Proviso East High School in Maywood. She lettered in volleyball all four years and in softball and basketball three times. She won MVP honors her senior year and was selected to the West Suburban and All-conference team her junior and senior years. She also played on the West Team at the 1990 Sport Festival team, winning a silver medal.
Smith was born December 13, 1970 in Maywood, Ill. She is the daughter of S.L. and Alma Smith. Smith has three brothers (Marvin, Tony, Tyrone) and three sisters (Linda, Rene, Alma).
