Oct. 11, 2012
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The University of South Carolina Department of Athletics hosted the Arlo K. Elkins Memorial Tennis Tournament Weekend on Saturday and Sunday in Columbia, S.C. The event honored and built upon the legacy of coach Elkins' 29-year coaching career at the helm of the Gamecocks' women's tennis program.
The weekend kicked off with an alumni tennis tailgate before the Georgia football game on Saturday and continued with the Arlo K. Elkins Memorial Round Robin Tennis Tournament on Sunday at Carolina Tennis Center. Funds raised from the tournament will endow a women's tennis scholarship in Elkins' name.
Coach Elkins passed away March 31 this year after a battle with cancer. His love for the game and student-athletes was evident throughout his 29 years as the head coach of the women's tennis team.
Elkins ended his career at Carolina with a record of 438-291 (.601) and 19 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 17 straight from 1995 to 2011. His teams reached the NCAA Sweet 16 four times (1990, 1995, 1999, 2009) during his career and made one trip to the quarterfinals in 2009.
