Sept. 23, 2009
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina's women's tennis team will compete in its third tournament of the fall beginning Friday in Greenville, S.C., when it takes part in the 23rd annual Furman Fall Classic.
Eight schools are scheduled to play in the event and seven of them ended the 2009 season ranked in the top 25. In addition to Furman, Northwestern (2nd), Tennessee (10th), Clemson (11th), Florida State (19th), North Carolina (20th) and Vanderbilt (22nd) will be in attendance. The Gamecocks finished last season ranked 17th.
Representing South Carolina at the Furman Fall Classic will be junior Miljana Jocic, sophomores Anna Morgina and Dijana Stojic, and freshmen Josefin Andersson, Adriana Pereira, and Madeleine Saari-Byström.
Jocic is off to a 6-1 start in singles play following the SEC Fall Coaches Classic as well as the UVa Invitational. Pereira holds a 4-3 record after the first two tournaments of the year, and Stojic is hoping to regain her form from last spring after a slow 1-6 start this fall. Morgina went 2-1 at the SEC event, while Andersson finished 1-2 and both did not travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the UVa Invitational. Saari-Byström will be playing her first collegiate matches at the Furman Fall Classic.
Next week, members of the Gamecocks' squad will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the Michigan Invitational.
