Morgina Receives Invitation to NCAA Singles Championship

May 2, 2012

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Senior Anya Morgina from the No. 29-ranked South Carolina women's tennis team received her second consecutive invitation to the 64-person NCAA Singles Championship on Wednesday. The event takes place over May 23-28 in Athens, Ga., at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Morgina is the top-ranked Gamecock at No. 42 in the nation for singles. Earlier in the year, she ascended as high as No. 20 in the nation, the highest ranking for a Gamecock since 2009. She also holds a No. 65 ranking in doubles with Jaklin Alawi. Morgina went 14-6 playing at No. 1 singles the entire spring and had a 20-9 mark overall. She earned a spot on the All-SEC Second Team for her efforts this season, her second straight appearance on an all-conference team.

With Morgina's selection, South Carolina has placed a singles competitor or doubles team in 24 of 31 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. Laura Bernstein remains the only Gamecock to advance to the round of 16 in singles, doing so in 1983. In doubles, Helen Crook and Victoria Davies are the only South Carolina duo to go as far as the semifinals, which happened in 1994. Morgina lost in the first round in three sets last year to Denise Dy of Washington, the No. 4 seed in the draw.

The draws for the singles and doubles tournaments will be determined at a coaches meeting May 22.
