No. 29 Berg Named SEC Player Of The Week

March 7, 2018

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- For the second time in her collegiate career, South Carolina women's tennis senior Hadley Berg was named the SEC Player of the Week, it was announced Wednesday.

Berg went undefeated in singles in the Gamecocks' two-match road trip to Mississippi, picking up wins over No. 16 Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss and Janina Braun of Mississippi State. Berg's defeat of No. 16 Hartono marks the highest-ranked opponent she has defeated in her career. It was the first loss of the season for Hartono, who was 8-0 entering play on Saturday, including wins over No. 1 Bianca Turati, No. 12 Ena Shibahara and No. 9 Anna Danilina. Berg also earned SEC Player of the Week honors as a sophomore on March 23, 2016.

Paired with fellow All-American Paige Cline, Berg also earned a 6-2 doubles victory over Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak of Mississippi State. Berg's contributions helped the Gamecocks (10-3) take down their highest-ranked opponent of the season at No. 7 Ole Miss and open SEC play at 2-0.

With both victories, Berg improved to 4-0 at No. 1 singles in 2018. She is 6-2 in dual match play and is 18-3 overall in 2017-18. All six of Berg's victories in dual match play have been in straight sets, with three perfect 6-0 sets recorded, including one over Hartono on Saturday.

"We are all proud of Hadley," head coach Kevin Epley said. "She had two great matches this weekend and It's great to see her continue to improve throughout her senior year. We still think she has some upside left in her game, which will be exciting to see moving forward."

The senior is also working her way into the South Carolina record books. Her 18-3 singles record this season has her at 92-30 overall, eight shy of 100 on her career, with a winning percentage of .754 that ranks seventh in school history. She is tied with Brigit Folland for seventh on the South Carolina career list for singles wins with 92, and is looking to become just the fourth player in school history with 100 wins.

Berg and the Gamecocks will be back in action at the Carolina Tennis Center this weekend, taking on No. 35 Texas A&M at 4 p.m. ET on Friday and No. 36 LSU at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
