Gamecocks Look Strong on Second Day of ITA Regional

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The South Carolina women's tennis team posted a strong second-day showing at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional on Friday in Winston-Salem, N.C. Jaklin Alawi, Dominika Kanakova, Katerina Popova and Adriana Pereira all advanced to the singles round of 32 with first-round victories in the main draw. Alawi, Kanakova, Popova and Pereira all recorded their victories in straight sets. Josefin Andersson lost in the first round after advancing to the main draw through qualifying Thursday. Tessa Lyons from North Carolina defeated Andersson 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Alawi and Kanakova also advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles with a pair of victories. They first defeated Zhang and Forman from Wake Forest 8-3 and then snagged another 8-3 win versus Cridland and Gunaysu of Winthrop. Ximena Siles Luna and Alex Martin won their first-round match before losing in the round of 16, as did Andersson and Popova. In singles consolation matches, Martin and Siles Luna both picked up two wins on the day. Martin defeated Jayla Scott of North Carolina A&T 6-0, 6-0 and Brigita Bercyte from Wake Forest 6-3, 6-1. Siles Luna was a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Tamara Stanic of Campbell and she defeated North Carolina State's Christy Sipes 6-4, 6-2. Play continues in the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional on Saturday.
