Gamecocks Post Successful Showing on First Day of UVa Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- South Carolina's women's tennis team posted eight victories and just two defeats to open its fall season Friday at the UVa Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
The Gamecocks opened with wins in two of three doubles contests. Gira Schofield and Natasa Vuckovic teamed up for an 8-5 win against the team of Brock/Hojckova of NC State, while Miljana Jocic and Ana Marija Zubori were 8-6 winners over Dobrowolska/Spicin of Old Dominion. Suzanna Mansour and Ashley Miller suffered a 9-8 setback to Barringer/Mortlock of NC State.
South Carolina's Jelena Rajic posted a win in doubles teaming with Valeria Behr from UNC Greensboro. The tandem defeated Bleakley/Sessoms of NC State 8-5.
In singles play, Vuckovic notched a 7-5, 6-2 triumph against Lenka Hojckova from NC State, and Jocic had little difficulty dispatching Old Dominion's Margarita Spicin 6-4, 6-1. Rajic snagged a 6-2, 6-1 win from Neils Barringer of NC State, while Miller took a 6-3, 6-1 decision from the Wolfpack's Pender Sessoms. Zubori cruised in her match with Berkley Brock, winning 6-3, 6-2. Mansour recovered from a 7-5 first-set loss to State's Diana Mortlock to win 6-2, 6-2 in the second and third sets.
The Gamecocks' lone loss on the day in singles was Schofield, who fell 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Charleen Haarhoff from ODU.
Carolina continues play in the UVa Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center at 10 a.m. Saturday.
