COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina women's tennis closed the final day of the South Carolina Fall Invitational on Sunday after consecutive undefeated days on the singles and doubles sides. The Gamecocks won one of three doubles contests with Winthrop and took four of the six singles matches in the afternoon session.
Nikolina Jovic and Silvia Chinellato picked up the doubles win in the morning to close the session and avoid the Winthrop sweep, while Megan Davies, Jovic, Hadley Berg and Kennedy Wicker picked up victories in singles.
"These fall tournaments, especially this one, are a good chance to see the team compete," head coach Kevin Epley said. "The competition was pretty good. We had some tough matches out there today. I saw a lot of things we still need to work on. But as far as the base material we're pretty excited about this year. We just need to keep improving. It was a good tournament to see where we're at."
After a slow start in doubles, Davies, Jovic, Berg and Wicker rolled in their singles competitions with all four earning two-set wins.
"It was good to see how everyone works together as a team," Davies said. "And how I work with everyone else, as well. For doubles we all had different partners so it was good to see who works well with who."
In the final match of the day against Carolina's Paige Cline, Winthrop's Lauren Proctor earned the win on her way to being named tournament champion.
Altogether on the weekend, the Gamecocks won seven of nine doubles contests and 16 of 18 singles.
