No. 19 South Carolina Falls To No. 13 UCLA To Conclude ITA Indoors

ITA National Indoors: No. 19 South Carolina vs. No. 13 UCLA

MADISON, Wis. -- No. 19 South Carolina women's tennis (5-3) closed ITA Indoors with a loss to UCLA on Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Bruins defeated the Gamecocks, 4-1, after taking the doubles point and winning three of four completed singles matches. With the loss, the Gamecocks finished the ITA Indoors tournament at 1-2 against three Top 25 opponents and dropped to 0-3 in the all-time series with UCLA.

DOUBLES

Rachel Rohrabacher and Megan Davies started the doubles portion of play off strong, rolling to a 6-3 win over Alaina Miller and Ena Shibahara. With the win, the duo improved to 3-0 in 2018. Trailing in doubles, UCLA was able to rattle off two straight wins to capture the point. After a tied score of 2-2, All-Americans Hadley Berg and Paige Cline took a 4-3 lead over opponents Ayan Broomfield and Gabby Andrews. The UCLA pair evened the score at 5 all, before winning two straight games for a 7-5 match victory. At No. 1 doubles, Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Silvia Chinellato faced an early 3-1 deficit to Jada Hart and Terri Fleming. The duo fought back, narrowing the score to 4-3, before tying it 5-5. The match entered a tiebreaker, with Hart and Fleming completing the comeback, 7-6(4).

SINGLES

A knee injury to Silvia Chinellato during singles play caused her match against No. 31-ranked singles player Abi Altick to be retired early, 6-4, 0-1, giving UCLA a 2-0 team lead. Rachel Rohrabacher helped the Gamecocks get back in striking distance by winning her match against Gabby Andrews on court six, 6-1, 6-4. Rohrabacher's singles win was the first team point registered by South Carolina against UCLA in program history. In their two previous matches against the Bruins, the Gamecocks took an 0-6 loss in 1990 and an 0-7 loss in 1996. With the win, Rohrabacher improved to 12-2 on the year and is 4-0 in 2018 with a six-match winning streak dating back to fall play.

Leading by one point, the Bruins powered past the Gamecocks with two singles wins in straight sets. No. 38-ranked singles player Hadley Berg dropped her second straight singles match of the weekend to Jada Hart, who won, 6-4, 6-0. Quickly after Berg was defeated, No. 118 Mia Horvit lost her singles match against No. 12-ranked singles player Ena Shibahara, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 1 lineup spot. The sophomore, who faced three Top 15 singles players during the tournament, is now 0-2 at the top lineup spot in 2018.

UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS

With the conclusion of ITA Indoors, the Gamecocks will host North Florida and Charleston Southern in a dual match doubleheader on Feb. 24, beginning at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. The Gamecocks are 3-0 at the Carolina Tennis Center this season.
