BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- 137 current or former Southeastern Conference student-athletes and 11 current SEC coaches will be participants in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, to be held Aug. 11-29 in Athens, Greece. Of the total list, 49 are current student-athletes that will have eligibility remaining during the 2004-05 academic year and 88 have participated in the past at SEC institutions, up to the 2003-04 academic year. Broken down by sports, there are 84 SEC participants in track and field, 52 in swimming and diving, four in tennis, two each in basketball, softball and soccer and one each in gymnastics and the triathlon. Broken down by schools, Auburn leads with 27 current and former student-athletes and three coaches, followed by Florida with 26 current and former student-athletes and two coaches. South Carolina has 18 former and current student-athletes and three coaches and LSU has 18 current and former student-athletes participating in the Olympics. The Summer Olympics start on Aug. 11 with soccer competition. The opening ceremonies are on Aug. 13 with closing ceremonies on Aug. 29.
