Audrey Broyles Earns SEC Pitcher of the Week Award|
April 29, 2013
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Redshirt senior Audrey Broyles, after tossing consecutive shutouts, earned the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week award, the league office announced today.
Broyles tossed a four-hit shutout on Wednesday against Charlotte, her second shutout of the year. She struck out a season-best seven to cap the doubleheader sweep over the 49ers. She did one better on Saturday, clinching the second-straight SEC series win on the road with her three-hitter at Mississippi State. She faced only two batters over the minimum, even helping herself out by starting the first of two double plays in the victory.
Broyles also moved up on two all-time top-15 lists at South Carolina in the outings, taking eighth on the innings pitched charts (490) and 11th alone on the wins listings (35).
This marks the second time Broyles has won the award after capturing the honor as a freshman on April 13, 2009. She's the first Gamecock to win a weekly award from the SEC in 2013, and it's the first non-freshman award for a Gamecock since her 2009 certificate.
Florida's Lauren Haegar garnered the league's Player of the Week honor, while Kentucky's Kelsey Nunley took the Freshman of the Week nod.
The Gamecocks close their regular-season slate at home this weekend against top-five Florida. First pitch for Friday night is set for 6 p.m. EDT at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.
