Softball Starts Fall Games With Pair Of Wins Over Spartanburg Methodist
Sept. 28, 2009
COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina, in its first fall games in recent history, swept its doubleheader from Spartanburg Methodist College, picking up a 5-0 win in game one before taking a 2-1 victory home in game two. Senior Lindsay Walker had four hits on the night, including two doubles, scoring two runs while driving in two more to lead the Gamecocks.
In game one, South Carolina scored all its runs in a five-run fifth. Walker had the big blow, a two-RBI double that scored sophomore Lauren Lackey and senior Adele Voigt. Junior April Borchardt, junior P.J. Fulmer and sophomore Kaitlin Westfall also drove in runs in the frame.
Junior Ashley Chastain got the win in the opener, striking out four while allowing just two hits in five innings of work.
Game two saw the Pioneers score first, but the Gamecocks responded with two in the bottom of the first to retake the lead. A pair of one-out hits by Borchardt and Walker got the inning started, and a wild pitch moved both into scoring position. After a fielder's choice and a line out, sophomore Evan Childs came through with a base hit, plating both Carolina Gamecock runs.
Sophomore Kierstyn White went four innings, striking out five while walking one and giving up one earned run on two hits in the win. Borchardt pitched around some self-made trouble in the fifth to get a three-inning save.
South Carolina hosts USC Aiken for a doubleheader in its second fall outing, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday at Beckham Field.
