Gamecocks Take Game One, 7-3, at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Gamecock bats came to life with 11 hits, leading South Carolina (22-20, 4-13 SEC) to a 7-3 win over Arkansas (10-33, 1-19 SEC) in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Bogle Park.
Freshman second baseman Dana Hathorn led the Gamecocks with a 3-for-4 day, posting three RBI, two runs scored and a homer. Junior leftfielder Kaitlin Westfall went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while junior centerfielder Lauren Lackey went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Five different Razorbacks had hits in the contest.
Sophomore Samie Garcia started the Gamecocks' scoring in the first, racing in from second after an error on the Razorback second baseman. Westfall had an RBI single to plate Mendes, while junior third baseman Evan Childs produced a two-out, two-RBI double to score both Westfall and Hathorn, making it 4-0 after a half inning.
Senior designated player Laura Mendes made it 5-0 in the fourth with her sacrifice fly that scored Lackey after she started the inning with a single. The Gamecocks tacked on two more in the fifth when Hathorn launched her first career homer, a two-run shot that scored pinch runner Jackie Slawson after she came on for Westfall after she started the frame with a double.
Arkansas tried to make things interesting, scoring three in the sixth. Jennifer Rambo doubled on a 3-2 pitch, scoring Becca Carden from first. Geile and Gee posted two-out RBI singles.
Gamecock redshirt sophomore Audrey Broyles (6-6) got the win, allowing only one hit in five innings of work while fanning five. Hope McLemore (4-10) took the loss, giving up all seven runs, three earned, on 10 hits and a walk in 4.1 innings.
