Broyles Tosses Shutout to Lead Gamecocks Past Auburn, 5-0, in Final Game of Series
March 29, 2009
AUBURN, Ala. - Gamecock freshman starter Audrey Broyles tossed a six-hit shutout to lead South Carolina past Auburn, 5-0, to salvage the final game of the three-game set at Jane B. Moore Field on Sunday afternoon. The win moves the Gamecocks to 14-15 on the year and 2-13 in Southeastern Conference action, while Auburn falls to 25-10 and 5-4 in the league.
Broyles (8-7) scattered those six hits and one walk over seven innings while striking out eight in her second career shutout. Auburn's Anna Thompson (12-6) got the loss, allowing two earned runs on three walks and three hits while fanning six in four innings of work.
Junior Lindsay Walker started the scoring in the fourth with an RBI single, plating Fulmer after she walked and went to third on Semento's double. Thompson came back to get two strikeouts before Lackey lined a ball off the Auburn third baseman's glove, which allowed Semento to cross the plate. Thompson got a pop out to end the frame.
South Carolina put three more on the board in the fifth thanks to pinch hitter Kaitlin Westfall's bases-loaded triple. Junior Adele Voigt started the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a groundout. Fulmer reached on a dropped fly ball, and both Voigt and Fulmer advanced on Semento's walk. Tiger reliever Holly Ragsdale induced a pop out before Westfall came up and droved the 1-2 pitch to the wall in center, allowing all three runs to score. Ragsdale got a fly ball to left to end the frame.
The Gamecocks return to action on Wednesday when they go out of conference to take on Charlotte at 4 p.m. EDT on the UNCC campus.
