COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina women's soccer team earned its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid as the 2011 selections to the 64-team tournament were announced Monday afternoon. The Gamecocks (15-6-0) will host the first round of the tournament with the University of Texas Longhorns (11-8-1) traveling to Columbia for the first meeting between the two teams.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday night at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
Texas earned an at-large bid to the tournament after finishing tied for fourth in the Big 12 with a 3-4-1 conference mark. The Longhorns advanced to the semifinal of the Big 12 tournament. Texas and South Carolina have one common opponent in Georgia, a team the Longhorns defeated 3-0 in Athens.
South Carolina enters postseason play with a 15-6-0 record, a No. 19 NSCAA national ranking and the outright SEC Regular Season and SEC Eastern Division titles with a 9-2-0 conference mark. The Gamecocks posted four wins against RPI top 30 teams (Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, LSU), including a win against an RPI Top 10 team on the road.
South Carolina's eight true-road wins this season are tied for second-most in the country, and the Gamecocks are one of only four teams in the country with at least nine wins away from home (road and neutral site games). The team has won eight of its last nine games this season
The Gamecocks played six of their first seven games on the road in addition to a road-heavy SEC schedule. South Carolina won the SEC Regular season despite a tough SEC schedule that included away matches at No. 2 seed LSU (W, 4-1), No. 3 seed Tennessee (W, 2-1), No. 4 seed Florida (W, 2-1) and No. 5 seed Georgia (L, 1-2).
