Swinehart Opens Play at U.S. Women's Amateur
Aug. 8, 2011
BARRINGTON, R.I. - South Carolina sophomore Samantha Swinehart kicked off play in the 111th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Rhode Island Country Club Monday afternoon. Starting among the last groups of the day, she posted a round of 77 (+6).
Swinehart shook off a bogey on the second hole to post back-to-back pars before a double bogey put her at +3 through five holes. A birdie on the par-4 sixth go her back on track, and she posted three straight pars to make the turn at +2.
The Lancaster, Ohio, native caught fire on the back nine, picking up birdies on the first three holes of the stretch to get back to one-under. A weather delay derailed Swinehart's comeback, though, and the remaining par 4s on the course gave her trouble. She carded two bogeys, a double bogey and a triple in the final six holes of the round to finish in 94th place.
Only 13 of the 156 players in the field finished the first round under par, led by Jihee Kim of Korea, who carded a 66 (-5) to hold a two-shot lead over a pair of players tied for second.
