Olarra To Compete In 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup
March 14, 2018

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior women’s golfer Ainhoa Olarra has been selected to play in the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Wednesday during Golf Channel’s Golf Central.

Olarra will compete for the 12-player women’s international team at the match play event, set for July 6-8 at the Evian Resort Golf Club in southeastern France.

The San Sebastian, Spain, native earned a spot on the team based on her spot in Golfstat’s current player rankings. Olarra is listed as the No. 5 ranked international women’s player, and she sits at No. 18 overall. The Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking also takes into account individual wins and high finishes, poor finishes and a strength of schedule component.

The top-six American and international golfers from both the men’s and women’s sides were given a spot in the Arnold Palmer Cup. The remaining six men’s and women’s spots for the United States consist of five committee selections, including at least one non-Division I golfer and a coaches pick. The final spots on the two international squads are filled by the men’s and women’s winners of the R&A Scholars Tournament, four committee selections and a coaches pick.

Olarra has solidified herself as one of the most consistent golfers in the country this season. The senior has placed inside the top 25 in four of her five tournaments this season, and she’s boasted a top-five showing in each of her last three tournaments dating back to the 2017 Tar Heel Invitational. Olarra notched her first collegiate victory at the 2018 Florida State Match-Up after finishing with the program’s third-lowest 54-hole total (206, -10) at the two-day event. She has shot par or better in 11 of her 14 rounds, and her team-leading 70.36 stroke average ranks fifth in NCAA Division I.

The No. 9 Gamecocks return to action this weekend when they compete in the 2018 Evans Derby Experience in Auburn, Ala. The 54-hole event, which takes place March 18-20, will be contested at the Auburn University Club.
