Two Rounds Complete at Liz Murphey Classic
April 2, 2011
By Wes Todd Assistant Media Relations Director
It was a tough day for the Gamecocks. Among the five in the starting lineup, only freshman Suzie Lee was able to break 80, shooting a 5-over-par 77 to lead Carolina. She was even-par through seven holes, making a pair of birdies to offset two opening bogeys before making the turn at just 1-over. She would avoid any big numbers on her second nine, but made four bogeys to finish at 5-over for the day. Sophomore Meredith Swanson, playing as an individual, improved by five shots on her opening round with a 78 (+6). In her first seven holes, she recorded two birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey, and she made the turn at 3-over for the day. Three straight bogeys to open her back nine dropped her to 6-over, but she overcame a bogey at 17 with a birdie at the 18th to finish at 6-over day. Junior Katie Burnett posted an 81 (+9) in her second round. Her front nine was mostly uneventful as she carded three bogeys and a birdie to make the turn at 2-over. But the back end of her round was tough as she made three bogeys and two double-bogeys on her last five holes. Katie Rose Higgins and Samantha Swinehart both shot 83 (+11), and Amanda Strang signed for an 84 (+12). Alabama leads the way at 1-over-par after a round of 291 (+3) today. Purdue is four shots back at 5-over-par 581, with Georgia in third place at 585 (+9). Individually, Purdue's Numa Gulyanamitta is the tournament leader at even-par 144, with UGA's Marta Silva Zamora and Arkansas' Emily Tubert tied for second at 145 (+1). Round three begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday; the Gamecocks will begin the final round on hole 15. Live scoring is available through golfstat.com.
