COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Southeastern Conference on Friday announced its inaugural end-of-season equestrian awards, as voted upon by the league’s four head coaches.
South Carolina head coach Boo Major was named the 2013 SEC Equestrian Coach of the Year, after leading her team to the inaugural SEC Equestrian Championship with wins against then-No. 1 Georgia and then-No. 2 Auburn.
South Carolina’s Kimberly McCormack took home the 2013 SEC Equestrian Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor. McCormack has a 4.0 grade point average in geophysics and marine sciences and has earned recognition both on the SEC Academic Honor Roll and the NCEA All-Academic First Team. She became the first rider in school history to compete in 100 head-to-head rides and was a member of the 2013 SEC All-Championship Team for Equitation Over Fences.
McCormack also earned the SEC’s Equitation Over Fences Rider of the Year recognition. She posted an 11-1 record in the event with one MVP honor in 2012-13. She won 10 consecutive jumping points dating back to Nov. 2 at Georgia and was named October’s Most Outstanding Hunt Seat Rider of the Month by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association. McCormack, who was named to the SEC All-Championship Team in the event, posted the most wins over fences on her team this year and logged the SEC’s highest fences score of the regular season at 94.
South Carolina’s Johnna Letchworth is the SEC Horsemanship Rider of the Year. She charted a 10-2-1 record with five MVP honors and led her team in MVP recognition. Letchworth led the SEC in horsemanship wins with 10, including eight in SEC meets. She posted the SEC’s highest horsemanship score of 80.5 on Feb. 14.
The All-SEC team and the Freshman All-SEC team consist of up to 20 members across the four events, as voted on by the league’s head coaches, and ties are not broken.
