March 22, 2004
Columbia,S.C. - The University of South Carolina equestrian team will send nine of its riders to compete in Auburn Ala., on March 27th at the Southern Equestrian Championships. The team competed in the Zone 5 Region 2 Finals at Erskine College's Equestrian Facility in Greenwood, S.C., this past weekend and posted a good showing.
The team was led by Tara Brother, won both Open Equitation on the Flat along with Open Equitation over Fences. Brothers was also named Zone 5 Region 2 High Point Hunter Seat Rider. This award automatically qualifies her for Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Nationals. Nationals will be held April 3-4 in Rome, Ga., and will be hosted by Berry College.
The younger members of the team, sophomore Chelsea Koornick and Laura Pipkin also rode well. Koornick won Intermediate Over Fences, while Pipkin won Novice Flat. Also riding well for USC was freshman Dana Hancock who placed second in Open Flat.
Seniors Lindsey Wilson and Kyra Hufford finished third in Intermediate Flat and second in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, respectively. In order for the Gamecocks to advance to Zones, they had to place in the top three at Regionals. The Gamecocks finished the weekend as the reserve High Point team in both Hunt Seat and Western behind Berry Collge.
" I wish they all could have qualified today", said Head Coach Boo Duncan, " I was happy to have the six Hunt Seat riders advance, but I wish it could have been eight".
The Gamecocks will also compete in a varsity head-to head competition against Auburn and the defending Varsity Champion Georgia on March 27-28.
