Gamecocks Drop Competition to No. 1 Bulldogs

BISHOP, Ga. - The fourth-ranked South Carolina equestrian team dropped its first away competition of the season, a 15-4 defeat at the hands of the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. The Gamecocks fall to 2-2 on the season, while Georgia improves to 3-0.
"Today was a tough loss for us," head coach Boo Major said. "Congratulations to Georgia's riders for riding well this afternoon."
The Bulldogs began Saturday's competition with a 5-0 lead after sweeping Equitation Over Fances.
Georgia then went on to win Equitation on the Flat 3-2, with South Carolina's two points coming from sophomore Tilden Brighton and junior Colvin Hedgepeth. Hedgepeth won her ride 90-84 and is now 4-0 this season.
In Horsemanship, junior Maggie Fortune won her ride 76-75, but the Bulldogs won the remaining four points.
In Reining, Georgia took the event 3-1. South Carolina's Audrey Jewell was the lone Gamecock reiner to score a point, as the sophomore won her ride 72.5-71.5. Freshman Melia Blakely rode her opponent to a 74-74 tie.
The Gamecocks close out the fall portion of their schedule Oct. 29 when South Carolina travels to Manhattan, KS to compete against the sixth-ranked Wildcats.
