Wilson Named to Wooden Award Midseason List
Jan. 11, 2018

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior forward A’ja Wilson has earned a spot on the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Thursday. This season marks the fourth year Wilson has been selected to the midseason list.

The leading candidates for the national honor will be cut to 20 players in early February before 15 student-athletes are placed on the final ballot prior to the NCAA Tournament. Wilson has been a finalist for the accolade the last two seasons, and she was put on the award’s final ballot as a freshman in 2015.

The Hopkins, S.C., native and three-time All-American leads the SEC and ranks third in NCAA Division I with a career-best 23.5 points per game this season. She also paces the league in blocks per game (3.2), and her 11.1 boards per contest stand as the third-best mark among conference players. Wilson has netted at least 25 points in nine of Carolina’s 15 games this season, and three of her team-high 11 double-doubles have come against ranked foes.

The No. 9/8 Gamecocks (13-2, 2-1 SEC) resume SEC play tonight at home against Auburn (10-5, 1-2 SEC). Tipoff from Colonial Life Arena is set for 7 p.m., and the contest can be seen on SEC Network+.
