Paul Jubb Advances in ITF Futures

NICEVILLE, Fla. - After battling his way through the qualifying bracket, Paul Jubb earned his first win of the main draw of the Niceville ITF Futures on Tuesday. The sophomore Gamecock defeated Carl Soderlund to advance to the second round, which he will play in on Thursday.

Jubb had a slow start against his Swedish opponent, falling 6-1 in the first set. The Gamecocks’ Englishman came back strong in the second set, closing it out 6-2. The third set came down to a tiebreaker, which Jubb won 7-6 (5).

To earn his spot in the main draw, Jubb won four rounds in the qualifying bracket. The Gamecock took down Jake Douglas (7-6 (2), 7-5), Johnathan Chang (7-5, 6-2), Hamis Stewart (5-7, 6-3, 6-2) and Edward Cristian Stocia (6-3, 6-0) to earn one of eight qualifying entries in the main draw.

Italy’s Fabrizio Ornago and the United States’ Sebastian Korda will compete on Wednesday to see who will face Jubb in the second round of the main draw on Thursday. Follow @GamecocksMTennis for live updates on Jubb’s progress in the tournament.
