Gamecocks Move to Second Round at ITF Futures

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - South Carolina men’s tennis earned two wins in the first round of qualifying at the Birmingham ITF Futures today. Senior Gabriel Friedrich and freshman Francisco Cerundolo both took home wins in the round of 128 and will continue into Saturday’s second round.

Friedrich secured a big win over No. 3 seed Nicholas Bybel in the first round of qualifying. The Porto Alegre, Brazil, native went 6-2, 6-1 over Bybel, who holds an ATP rank of 1233.

Representing his home country of Argentina, Cerundolo didn’t give up a game in his first-round match. He topped India’s Venkat Narsimha Reddy Ravula 6-0, 6-0 to move on to the second round of qualifying.

The ITF Futures are professional-level tournaments played internationally to give young players the opportunity to gain ATP points.
