Men's Tennis Earns Sixth-Consecutive ITA All-Academic Team Honors
July 26, 2017

COLUMBIA, SC - South Carolina men's tennis was named a 2017 All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday. The announcement marks the sixth-straight season the Gamecocks have earned the honor. Senior Alex Fennell and redshirt junior Thomas Mayronne earned individual honors as ITA Scholar-Athletes for their success in the classroom in the 2016-17 academic year. Mayronne earned the title for the third-consecutive year while Fennell received the title for the second-consecutive year.

"Being an ITA All-Academic Team for the sixth year in a row is a great accomplishment for this program," head coach Josh Goffi remarked. "These guys, like in years past, have bought into the theory that being a champion isn't a sometime thing; it's a full-time commitment. It's a way of life. They take our culture of excellence into the classroom, on the court, and into the community.

"It's great to see Thomas Mayronne and Alex Fennell get recognized individually also. They consistently lead in the classroom by holding a high standard through example."

In order to receive ITA All-Academic Team status, a program must maintain a 3.20 grade point average or above on a 4.00 scale. The association takes all varsity letter-winners in consideration for the cumulative team GPA, including both Fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters.

For Fennell and Mayronne to secure a spot as ITA Scholar-Athletes, they had to be varsity-letter winners, maintain GPAs of at least 3.50 and be enrolled at the University for the past two semesters.

The Gamecocks are one of seven SEC teams to earn the honor, as well as one of 11 SEC teams to have individuals named 2017 ITA Scholar-Athletes.
