Friedrich named SEC Player of the Week
March 7, 2018

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina men's tennis senior Gabriel Friedrich has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday. The award is the first weekly honor for the Gamecocks this season, coming on the heels of two ITA top-25 wins for Friedrich last weekend.

Friedrich, now ranked as the 29th singles player in the country, took down No. 25 Timo Stodder of Tennessee on Friday night in the Gamecocks' SEC opener. He then defeated No. 11 Wayne Montgomery of 17th-ranked Georgia to help South Carolina to a 4-3 win, its first victory over the Bulldogs since 2005.

Friedrich, alongside his No. 1 doubles partner Yancy Dennis, also helped take out the nation's 12th-ranked doubles pair in Georgia's Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski. The pair have now won two ranked matches on the season and moved to No. 34 in this week's ITA doubles rankings.

Friedrich extended his singles win streak to five matches, including three straight over ranked opponents. Friedrich has won four of his last five matches in straight sets from the Gamecocks' No. 1 singles position and is now 19-5 overall on the season.

South Carolina will embark on its first SEC road trip of the season this weekend as it takes on Auburn on Fri., Mar. 9, at 7 p.m., followed by a trip to battle Mississippi State on Sun., Mar. 11 at 2 p.m.
