Adams Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Feb. 8, 2012
COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina freshman Andrew Adams was named SEC Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week, the league announced today. Adams played a key role in the Gamecocks' 5-2 win at then-No. 22 Georgia Tech last weekend, yielding just two games in his No. 3 singles match against the 13th-ranked player in the Southeast Region.
"It's great to see this recognition," South Carolina head coach Josh Goffi said. "It's the first SEC honor this team has received in the last two seasons, and hopefully, it's the first of many more to come. Andrew has done a great job so far this season. Being a freshman and playing in the top half of the lineup is not an easy task. It's a great accolade to start his season."
Adams leads the Gamecocks with a 14-4 singles record this season and has played all six dual matches in one of the top three singles positions. In his first season in the Garnet and Black, he has won the match-clinching point five times, including last week as the Gamecocks rallied to post a win. It was the highest ranked opponent South Carolina has defeated since a 4-3 victory over then-No. 18 Wake Forest on March 19, 2009.
South Carolina is back in action on Thu., Feb. 9, at No. 42 Wake Forest with a 3 p.m. start. The Gamecocks close out a three-match road swing against Atlantic Coast Conference schools with a trip to No. 51 NC State on Sat., Feb. 11, at 1 p.m., before returning to play their first matches at Carolina Tennis Center on Sat., Feb. 25. The day's doubleheader begins at 10 a.m.
