Machado Leads Gamecocks to Six Victories at Duke Invite
Sept. 19, 2010
COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina men's tennis scored six wins at the Duke Fab Four Invite Saturday with junior Ivan Machado leading the way with a hand in three of them. Sophomore Harry Menzies added a pair of singles victories, and sophomore Alexander Kostanov picked up a singles and a doubles win to cap the scoring for the Gamecocks. Machado and Kostanov opened the day with a hard-fought doubles win over North Carolina Central's Jack Waissen and Trey Chatman in the consolation third place final of Section B. The Gamecock tandem needed a tiebreaker to collect the win but did not allow its opponent a single point in the extra frame. In singles play, Kostanov fell into the Section A fifth-place bracket after dropping his quarterfinal match to Ivan Salec of Radford 7-5, 6-3. South Carolina's sophomore bounced back to fight out a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over NC State's Julian Sullivan. Kostanov will face Danny Kreyman of Wake Forest on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. with the winner claiming fifth place in the section. Also in Section A, freshman Jake Bowling won his first-set tiebreaker over NC Central's Jack Waissen but could not hold off his opponent, falling 6-7 (1), 6-0, 6-4. Bowling dropped his second match of the day as well, a 7-5, 6-4 decision to Alex Rafiee of North Carolina. Machado, meanwhile, continued his stampede through Section B, knocking off fourth-seeded Alejandro Calligari of Louisville 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals. A workman-like 6-4, 6-3 win over North Carolina's Brennan Boyajian put the Gamecock junior into the final, which he will play against Duke's Chris Mengel at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. A pair of wins for Menzies has the sophomore playing in the Section C Consolation Final on Sunday. Menzies opened the day by rolling past Virginia Tech's Corado Tocci and followed the effort with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Connor Sherwood of Wake Forest. Menzies will take on Wake Forest's Iain Atkinson at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
