Gamecocks Improve to 4-0 After Doubleheader

DAVIDSON, N.C. -

South Carolina men's tennis brought home two more wins after a doubleheader in Davidson, N.C., on Saturday. The Gamecocks took down Elon and Davidson by matching 6-1 scores on their way to a 4-0 start to the season.

Facing Elon to start the day, South Carolina took the doubles point. Paul Jubb and Thomas Mayronne took on Kyle Frankel and Camilo Ponce in the No. 2 spot, winning the match 6-3. In the No. 3 spot, Harrison O'Keefe and Yancy Dennis, ranked No. 8 in the Oracle/ITA Doubles Rankings, made quick work of Elon's Felipe Sarrasague and Felipe Osses-Konig to win their match 6-1.

South Carolina went on to win five of the six singles matches as well. Friedrich, Jubb and Mayronne won their Nos. 1, 3 and 5 matches, respectively, in straight sets. Playing in the No. 2 position, Francisco Cerundolo fought through his match against Mario Paccini, fighting all the way through the tie breaker to win the match 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(0).

In the No. 4 match, Dennis battled Elon's Salvador Mijares through three full sets, winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. O'Keefe and Osses-Konig split the first two sets in their No. 6 match with the Phoenix junior claiming the super tiebreak to win the match 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.

South Carolina took on host Davidson in their afternoon matchup. The Gamecocks again delivered the doubles point with Friedrich and Cerundolo topping Davidson's Axel Fries and Artem Khrapko 6-2 in the No. 1 spot. Wood Benton and Dennis delivered the doubles point with their win 6-1 over Matthew Rose and Macintos.

The Gamecocks followed with another 5-1 record in singles. Friedrich started the match strong from the No. 1 spot, topping Khrapko 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2, Cerundolo took another three-set match, finishing with a win over Shamael Chaudhry 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Dennis' No. 3 match went to a tie breaker after he took the first set 6-1. The Gamecocks' junior powered through to earn the win over Hager 6-1, 7-6 (2). Moving up to the No. 4 spot for the afternoon match, Mayronne bounced back to collect the three-set win over Fries, finishing 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

O'Keefe and Benton rounded out the singles lineup for the Gamecocks, with O'Keefe falling to Thomas Mason 6-2,6-3 and Benton topping Yash Parikh 1-6, 6-3, 10-5.

The Gamecocks return to North Carolina next weekend for ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Chapel Hill. South Carolina will face No. 17 Michigan in first-round action at 9 a.m. Saturday. Sunday's match against either No. 3 North Carolina or Drake will be at either 9:30 a.m. or 1 p.m.
