Men's Soccer vs. Old Dominion
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina (4-8-2, 0-4-2 C-USA) welcomes in Old Dominion (8-4-2, 5-1-0 C-USA) for Senior Day on Sunday at Stone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET at The Graveyard. All fans receive free admission with their tickets from Saturday’s Homecoming football game versus Vanderbilt.
An important three points is up for grabs in the conference clash as the Gamecocks are looking to punch their ticket to the 2017 Conference USA Tournament in Norfolk, Va. Only the top seven teams in the conference standings advance to the conference tournament where an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament is on the line.
Carolina supported Ovarian Cancer Awareness all month long in September both at home and on the road by wearing teal warmup shirts for their matches. In addition to the shirts, the Gamecock coaching staff and support staff wore teal polo shirts on the sidelines at every game.
The team's hope is to promote awareness for this cancer and encourage women to get regular check ups. Contact your local ovarian cancer support group for more information at 888-682-7426 or visit the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition's website by clicking here. Remember, NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE!
The teal warmup shirts worn by the team are on sale at the Russell House Bookstore, the game day store and online by clicking here.
FROM THE COACH
"It’s exciting at the end of the year in the conference. Everyone’s got to get points in order to get into the conference tournament. We’re in that situation. I think our guys are ready. It should be a really good match. We need to get the points. We need to have a good result, so it’s really important for us on Sunday afternoon." – head coach Mark Berson
SCOUTING OLD DOMINION
The Monarchs have had a solid 2017 campaign, posting an 8-4-2 overall record and a 5-1-0 record in C-USA play. ODU was recently handed its first loss of the conference slate 3-1 on the road at No. 8 FIU. The team is led offensively by Brandon Perdue and Max Wilschrey. Perdue leads the team with 16 points and four assists. He’s tied for the team lead with Wilschrey for goals with six. Wilschrey ranks second in points with 13. The Monarchs’ attack is well-balanced and features three more players with three goals each in Niko Klosterhalfen, Sebastien Hauret and Tyler Edwards. The trio, along with Perdue and Wilschrey, has combined to score 21 of the team’s 26 goals. Mertcan Akar has been solid in goal for ODU, starting every match and posting five shutouts. He’s made 66 saves (.759 save percentage) and allowed 21 goals (1.44 GAA) in 14 matches. The team’s split matches a year ago, with the Gamecocks winning 3-2 in the regular season at ODU. The Monarchs upset second-seeded Carolina later in the season in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Tournament in Huntington, W. Va.
Carolina travels to Birmingham, Ala. for the regular season finale on Friday vs. UAB (5-5-4 overall, 1-4-1 C-USA). Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and a berth to the 2017 Conference USA Tournament in Norfolk, Va. will likely be on the line as the teams will battle it out for the No. 7 seed.
