May 22, 2009
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Matches against four teams that participated in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, including three that were ranked in the final NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Top 25 Poll, highlight the upcoming 2009 season of South Carolina men's soccer. The Gamecocks will host 10 home dates at Stone Stadium, including one exhibition contest.
From the final NSCAA Top 25 Poll, South Carolina will host No. 2 Wake Forest in a mid-season non-conference contest in Columbia. The Gamecocks will also face No. 7 Northwestern in the Wildcats' home tournament in mid-September, while Carolina will compete against perennial Conference USA contender No. 16 Tulsa during league play in mid-October.
The Gamecocks kick off the season with an exhibition contest against High Point in late August, before welcoming Charlotte to Stone Stadium for the season opener on Sept. 1. Carolina continues play when it travels to archrival Clemson on Sept. 4, when the Gamecocks will aim for their third-consecutive victory over the Tigers. The Garnet and Black return home to host the annual adidas Gamecock Classic, Sept. 11-13, at Stone Stadium. Butler from the Horizon League, Presbyterian from the Big South and NCAA Tournament participant George Mason from the Colonial Athletic Association comprise the four-team field for the Classic. Carolina will face Butler (Sept. 11) and George Mason (Sept. 13) at the event.
The Garnet and Black continues non-conference tournament action at the highly-competitive Northwestern Wildcat Tournament in Evanston, Ill., Sept. 18-20. South Carolina will face Northern Illinois (Sept. 18) from the Mid-American Conference to open tournament play, followed by a match against host Northwestern, a squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last season, on Sept. 20.
The Gamecocks travel to Davidson (Sept. 25) and ACC foe NC State (Sept. 29) prior to opening the conference season at Central Florida on Oct. 4 in Orlando, Fla. South Carolina returns to the friendly confines of Stone Stadium for its longest homestand of the season, a five-game stretch beginning with a non-conference contest against intrastate rival Furman on Oct. 7. Carolina resumes C-USA action when it hosts reigning league champion Tulsa on Oct. 11, followed by home contests against SMU (Oct. 14) and Kentucky (Oct. 17).
Carolina takes a brief break from conference play when it hosts Wake Forest, the 2007 NCAA Tournament champion and a squad that advanced to the semifinals in 2008, on Oct. 20 to end the lengthy homestand. South Carolina will play three of its final four regular-season contests on the road, beginning with trips to Florida International (Oct. 24) and UAB (Oct. 28), before returning to Columbia for Senior Night festivities when Marshall visits Stone Stadium for league play on Halloween. The Gamecocks conclude regular-season play at Memphis on Nov. 7.
