South Carolina Falls to No. 16 Wake Forest, 3-0, in UNC Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The South Carolina men's soccer team fell to No. 16 Wake Forest, 2-0, on Friday in the first match of the North Carolina Nike Classic, played at Fetzer Field on the UNC campus. The Gamecocks' record slipped to 0-3 while Wake Forest improved to 2-1.

The Demon Deacons used three first-half goals to put the Gamecocks away. Justin Moose struck first, scoring on a breakaway from 15 yards out with the assist going to Michael Lahoud. Lahoud knocked in a goal of his own at 14:10, and Mark Ellington scored in the 23rd minute on assists from Wells Thompson and Ryan Solle. USC shut down Wake in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Carolina freshman goalkeeper Mike Gustavson collected five saves in the match, while Demon Deacon goalie Brian Davis finished with one.

Wake out-shot the Gamecocks, 11-7, and both teams were called offsides six times. Senior Eric Szeszycki, junior Mike Sambursky and freshman David Smith, who played in his first collegiate match, tallied two shots apiece to lead South Carolina.

With tonight's win, the Demon Deacons evened the all-time series with South Carolina, 11-11-4.

The Gamecocks will look to rebound on Sunday, Sept. 11, when they face No. 2 North Carolina. The match is set for 3:30 p.m. and fans can follow it live via Gametracker on South Carolina's official athletic web site, USCsports.com.
