COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The University of South Carolina Men’s Golf team was ranked 10th in the final Golfstat national rankings of the 2015-16 season, it was announced today. The top 10 finish is the second in as many seasons for the Gamecocks.

South Carolina ended the season with the best NCAA Championship performance in program history. The Gamecocks finished seventh in the stroke play portion of the event, a Carolina record, and they qualified for match play for the first time in school history.

The top 10 national ranking is another sign of the Gamecocks cementing their status as one of the elite men’s golf programs in the nation. South Carolina is one of only four schools to finish in the top 15 of the last three NCAA Championships, joining Texas, Illinois and LSU.

South Carolina is one of four SEC teams in the final top 10, joining Vanderbilt, Georgia and LSU. Texas, who finished as NCAA Championship runner-up, ended the year in the No. 1 spot.

Senior Will Starke led the Gamecocks at the NCAA Championship, finishing stroke play tied for 13th individually, while freshman Scott Stevens came up huge in match play, winning his quarterfinal pairing.

South Carolina won four tournaments this season, second-most in program history. Senior Matt NeSmith was the medalist at two of the wins, the Palmetto Intercollegiate Invitational and the General Hackler Championship, while sophomore Keenan Huskey was the top finisher as the Gamecocks took the Camden Collegiate Invitational and the Hootie and Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. Both players were named to the PING All-Southeast Region Team, while NeSmith earned First Team All-America honors, a first for the Carolina program.
