Men's Golf at the Camden Collegiate Invitational
CAMDEN, S.C. -- South Carolina men's golf took home the team title for the third time in four years at the 2017 Camden Collegiate Invitational with a 12-shot win on Sunday. The Gamecocks shot 292 (+12) in the final round to finish 1-over as a team and were led by top-10 finishes from Keenan Huskey (6th), Caleb Proveaux (T-7th) and Scott Stevens (T-7th).
Pin locations were difficult for the final round today, as just six players in the 89-man field shot par or better. James Madison, who held the lead after the first round Saturday, finished second in the team standings at 13-over. Logan Lowe of George Washington was the individual medalist, shooting 68-68-70 to finish at 4-under. August Lindvall of USC-Aiken was the individual runner-up after carding a field-best 66 (-4) to finish at 3-under for the tournament.
Huskey, an All-American last season and the team captain, shot 73 (+3) in the final round. He finished the tournament at 1-under and led the field in par-5 scoring average 4.22 (-7). The Greenville, S.C., native also tied for the field lead with two eagles.
Proveaux, who has been a staple in the Gamecocks lineup throughout the fall season, notched his first ever top-10 after shooting 75 (+5) in the third round on Sunday. His 66 on Saturday was one of the best rounds of the tournament. The sophomore from Lexington, S.C., T-2nd in the field in par-3 scoring average (2.87) and led the team with 11 birdies.
Stevens shot 74 (+4) in the final round to finish the tournament at 1-over alongside Proveaux. The junior All-SEC player from Chattanooga, Tenn., bounced back from a 4-over front nine and shot even par down the stretch. He had nine birdies, an eagle and led the field in par-4 scoring average at 3.93 (-2). Junior Will Miles carded the low round of the day for South Carolina with a 2-over 72. He finished T-17th for his ninth career top-20 finish and second this fall. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native, finished second on the team with 10 birdies this weekend. Sophomore Jamie Wilson, a two-time SEC Freshman of the Week selection last spring, shot 73 (+3) in the third round Sunday to finish T-24th as all five players in the lineup contributed with top-25 finishes.
Freshman Andrew Spiegler and redshirt senior Ben Dietrich played as individuals this weekend for Carolina. Spiegler led all individuals with a T-31 finish at 9-over. He shot 76 in the first round but bounced back with two solid rounds of 71 (+1) and 72 (+2). Dietrich T-36th just one shot behind Spiegler at 10-over. The Bluffton, S.C., native, carded an even par 70 in yesterday's second round.
QUOTING COACH Bill McDonald
"Well, I think the tournament was -- I wouldn't say won -- but we played so well yesterday afternoon. We were on a really hard golf course. Tough pins and it was a little bit breezier than we thought it would be. I think the guys were a little bit worn out getting back from Indianapolis on Tuesday night with a quick turnaround for this event. Lot of pressure playing at home even though we were supposed to win, it's still difficult to do it. Really proud of the guys -- it always feels good to win."
ROUND CHANGER Will Miles
Miles led the team with a 2-over 72 on a day that saw a lot of high scores up and down the field. He notched his second top-20 finish of the fall thanks to 10 birdies over 54 holes. The junior, who came on strong last spring and has been a key contributor this fall, was one of two Gamecocks with double-digit birdies at the Camden Collegiate Invitational.
South Carolina will travel 4,623 miles west to wrap-up its fall season at the Ka'anapali Collegiate in Lahaina, Hawaii for the second consecutive season. The three-day event, hosted by the University of Hawaii, runs from Nov. 3-5 and will be played at the Royal Ka'anapali Course.
