Men's Golf at All-American Intercollegiate
HUMBLE, Texas -- South Carolina had a steady start to its spring season on Friday at the All-American Intercollegiate. The Gamecocks shot 281 (-7) and are T-5th heading into the second round. All four counting scores from the five-man lineup were under-par.
Senior Keenan Huskey paced Carolina in round one with a 68 (-4). The 2017 All-American was on fire down the stretch, recording a 4-under 32 on the back nine. He had just one bogey and led the team with five birdies.
Fellow senior Ben Dietrich played well in his third start of the season, carding a 1-under 71. The Bluffton, S.C., native, shot 2-under (34) on the back nine thanks to consecutive birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15.
Junior Scott Stevens and sophomore Jamie Wilson, the other two counting scores Friday, each carded 71s as well. Stevens shot 34 (-2) on the front and 37 (+1) on the back. Wilson was even at the turn and shot 1-under (35) on the back. He played bogey free golf over his final nine holes.
Freshman Andrew Spiegler, who is making his third career start this weekend, carded an even par 72. He shot 1-over (37) on the front and 1-under (35) on the back with a pair of birdies.
QUOTING COACH Bill McDonald
"Pretty solid round by our guys today, and overall I thought we looked prepared and ready to play. We didn't play the front nine that great, and we missed a couple of birdie opportunities on the back nine. I'm always pleased when all five guys are at par or better. We're looking forward to the weekend."
ROUND CHANGER Keenan Huskey
Huskey's 68 on Friday marks his fifth round in the 60s during the 2017-18 season, which ranks second on the team behind Stevens (7). The Greenville, S.C., native, has set himself up nicely for the weekend and he will now be gunning for his seventh career top-five finish which will move him into a tie for eighth all-time at South Carolina. Today marked Huskey's 100th career round as a Gamecock. 51 of those 100 rounds are par or better.
The Gamecocks will be paired with No. 6 Baylor and South Alabama for the second round on Saturday. Freshman Andrew Spiegler will lead things off at 10:10 ET from hole one tomorrow morning.
