Rachel Bates enters her third season as the University of South Carolina men’s golf assistant coach. Upon graduating from South Carolina in 1993, Bates played professional golf on the Women’s Futures Golf Tour, European Tour and Florida Mini-Tours until the Spring of 1996. Later in her career, she rejoined the LPGA’s Developmental Tour from 1998 to 2000, and 2002. Bates, a native of Knoxville, Tenn., was on staff with the South Carolina Fellowship of Christian Athletes from the fall of 1996 to 1999. While with FCA she served on the national, state and local levels as a Midlands Area Representative and State Women’s Coordinator, speaking to and working with FCA groups in schools, as well as, helping organize events, retreats and camps. Bates continues to serve as a volunteer for the FCA. Bates earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Administration from South Carolina in 1993 and has earned credit towards her Master’s in Teaching Physical Education. She is the youngest of three, having an older sister, Rosemary Bates, and brother, Bill Bates, who played for and coached with the Dallas Cowboys. Bill currently coaches with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Bates, residing in Columbia, S.C., is the aunt of six nephews and one niece.
