Gamecocks Practice Report
Dec. 16, 2009
The University of South Carolina football squad spent Wednesday afternoon at the Bluff Road practice fields in preparation for the Papajohns.com Bowl game, scheduled for January 2, 2010 in Birmingham, Ala. The Gamecocks (7-5) will face the UConn Huskies (7-5) out of the Big East Conference at 1 p.m. CT at historic Legion Field.
"We had a good practice today," said head coach Steve Spurrier. "The guys were jumping around a little bit and we had a good little scrimmage afterwards. Some of the young receivers did pretty well. Reid McCollum and Andrew Clifford threw some good ones out there. It was productive for us today.
"We were a little bit better today," continued Coach Spurrier. "The second day was a little bit better than the first. We can still practice better though. We'll keep pushing for that."
Offensive tackle Quintin Richardson will not be available for the bowl game, according to Coach Spurrier. "Quintin had surgery the other day. He got his shoulder fixed and hopefully he'll be ready to go for spring ball. He needed it so we decided to go ahead and do it. We've got about eight or nine (offensive lineman) ready to play for the bowl game, so that's enough."
The Gamecocks appear to be in good shape academically for the bowl game. "As far as I know, everybody's made it," said Coach Spurrier. "I haven't heard any reports from Raymond (Harrison) yet. So unless something happens... "
Coach Spurrier is excited about the possible return of his two defensive ends for their senior seasons following a late season surge by Clifton Geathers. "(Geathers) has a chance to have a tremendous senior year," said Spurrier. "He and Cliff Matthews could be two of the best defensive ends in the country next year if all that works out. Hopefully it will."
The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Thursday afternoon.
