Gamecocks Work Out on Wednesday|
April 9, 2008
The University of South Carolina football squad returned to the Bluff Road practice fields for a two-hour, full-pad workout Wednesday night. It was the team's 11th of 15 scheduled spring practice dates.
The practice started with a magician on hand to entertain the squad. "We had a guy, Kevin Dawson, who is one of the best I've ever seen," said head coach Steve Spurrier. "I've been around him a couple of times. I invited him to come out and do some tricks for the guys. He's amazing. Most of our players have never seen a magician do those kinds of things."
Spurrier announced that junior safety Emanuel Cook would most likely be out for the remainder of the spring after suffering a thumb injury. "He cracked a bone in his thumb. He missed tonight. He's got some academic issues he's taking care of also."
Coach Spurrier was not overly pleased with the squad's performance in Monday's scrimmage after watching the film. "It wasn't very pretty on either side. That's why we practice. Hopefully we can get better. We're running wind sprints after practice in spring practice, which I don't think I've ever done that before. We're trying to make guys more accountable. We're trying to play with more discipline and more effort. We're trying everything we can. I've been a little frustrated lately, but I understand. I've been here three years. On offense we've had Sidney Rice and now Cory Boyd drafted, so I understand. We have good enough players to win. We haven't won the close games. We've got to start doing a little better and coach a little better. That's been a little frustrating. Sometimes you have to understand the other team is pretty good also."
The squad will return to the practice fields on Friday, beginning at 4:15 p.m. All practice are open to the public.
