Frank Martin Confident

When Frank Martin took over Kansas State's men's basketball program in 2007, the response from his colleagues in the coaching profession was almost always the same.

"People didn't understand it," Martin said. "Everyone was like, 'Why would you want to work there? It's a graveyard for coaches.'"

Five years later, Martin is hearing the same type of questions as he embarks on the next phase of his career at South Carolina. Just like he did in Manhattan, Kan. -- where he led K-State to four NCAA tournament berths -- Martin sees opportunity at a place where so many others have lost hope.

OK, OK, I know, I know: Frank Martin has yet to coach a game at South Carolina. You have to coach a game at a school before you can be placed in the annals of said school's greatest all-time coaches. Coaching at Kansas State is not quite like coaching at South Carolina, and there's a chance Martin could fail miserably in Columbia. I don't think that's likely, but I get what you're saying.

Frank Martin Named Head Basketball Coach

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Frank Martin has been named the head men's basketball coach at the University of South Carolina, announced today by Gamecocks' Athletic Director Eric Hyman. Martin becomes the 32nd head coach in the history of the South Carolina program, which enters its 105th season as a varsity sport in 2012-13.
