Celebrating 100 Years of Basketball

Jan. 25, 2008

Columbia, SC - In celebration of the 100 Years of Gamecock Basketball, South Carolina is honoring past lettermen at home games throughout the season. A series of events held throughout the season will mark this milestone in South Carolina Athletics.

The "Gamecock Greats" are players that were selected for their outstanding basketball achievements during their time at Carolina; a number of them will be honored during halftime at home games throughout the season. Following the halftime recognition, fans will have the opportunity to obtain autographs from the former players on the concourse. At the December 22nd game versus College of Charleston, Skip Harlicka, point guard on the 1967-1968 ACC Championship team, was honored with his fellow teammates. All five starters on this team were selected as Gamecock Greats. When asked about the 100 Years celebrations, Harlicka said, "The University of South Carolina is an international class institution. By honoring us, they have honored themselves." He described his time back at Carolina as an "exceptional experience".

In addition to honoring the Gamecock Greats, over 300 basketball lettermen will be recognized during Alumni Reunion Weekend which will take place February 22nd and 23rd. Lettermen will be present at the special recognition ceremony during halftime at the Mississippi State game. The halftime show will include the results from the All-Decade and All-Century team voting. Fans can still vote for their selections by clicking here.

An alumni basketball game will take place prior to the Mississippi State game on February 23rd. A ticket for the Mississippi State game must be presented in order to attend the alumni game. All lettermen wishing to participate will be available for autographs following the game.

The rich history of South Carolina Basketball is reflected in the visual enhancements made to the Colonial Center. Championship banners have been hung in the arena, including the recent NIT championship wins as well as retired jerseys of former players. Fans can also look for the Basketball Hall of Fame mural located in the concourse as well.
