COLUMBIA, S.C. - Legendary head men's basketball coach Frank McGuire was honored on Friday evening with a street topping ceremony held inside Colonial Life Arena. Greene Street, between Assembly and Gadsden Streets, was topped as "McGuire Way" to commemorate the Gamecock coaching legend.
The event began with a video highlighting Coach McGuire, followed by remarks from Athletics Director Ray Tanner and Head Men's Basketball Coach Frank Martin. City of Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin presented a city resolution to McGuire's daughter, Carol Ann Morgan, her family and former McGuire-era players.
The event's MC, voice of the Gamecocks Andy Demetra, then welcomed Senator John Courson to the podium, who introduced fellow Senator Nikki Setzler, and House member James Smith. Smith then presented a concurrent resolution to the group.
Other speakers at the event included Joe McCulloch and Gamecock greats Gary Gregor and Alex English. Mayor Benjamin, Gamecock basketball senior guard Brenton Williams, Morgan and her family and McGuire-era legends then unveiled the street topper as a group and the street was proclaimed "McGuire Way."
Legends Weekend events continue on Saturday pre-game at Colonial Life Arena.
