Baseball Faces Arkansas Sunday Afternoon to Continue Super Regional Play

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The University of South Carolina baseball team will face No. 5 Arkansas this afternoon (Sunday, June 10) in game two of the Fayetteville Super Regional. The Gamecocks and Razorbacks play at 3 p.m. EDT (2 p.m. CDT) with the game televised on ESPN.

NOTABLES

  • South Carolina struck first with a Hunter Taylor RBI double in the second and got solo home runs from LT Tolbert and Madison Stokes, but Arkansas scored the final six runs in a 9-3 win over the Gamecocks on Saturday (June 9). Carolina will now need to win the final two games of the Fayetteville Super Regional to advance to the College World Series.
  • Tolbert homered for the seventh time this season and the second time in a row against Arkansas. Tolbert is now hitting .412 (7-for-17) this season against the Razorbacks.
  • Madison Stokes hit his 11th home run of the season in the game one loss. Stokes now has 15 career home runs and 82 career RBI.
  • Carolina is now 17-14 all-time in Super Regional action. Carolina has come back to force a game three in a Super Regional in 2001 (vs. Stanford), 2007 (vs. North Carolina) and 2013 (vs. North Carolina)
  • The Gamecocks are expected to throw redshirt sophomore Cody Morris on Sunday afternoon. Morris is 8-3 on the season with a 3.68 ERA. He was named to the Greenville Regional All-Tournament team after striking out seven in a career-best 7.1 innings pitched in a 4-2 win over East Carolina on June 2. Morris also was drafted in the seventh round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday.
  • Morris pitched against the Razorbacks in Fayetteville on April 14, He allowed an unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts in five innings pitched in a 3-0 loss to the Razorbacks.
  • Arkansas’ projected starter, Kacey Murphy, has pitched twice against the Gamecocks this season. He gave up just one hit in six-plus innings in a 2-0, seven-inning win over Carolina in April 14. Then in the SEC Tournament, Murphy allowed five earned runs and five hits in 5.2 innings pitched in a 13-8 Arkansas win.
