Grab your superhero cape and gather your super-friends as Superhero Sunday comes to Founder’s Park for the series finale between the No. 2 ranked South Carolina and No. 1 ranked Florida baseball teams. Fans are encouraged to dress in their favorite superhero gear while enjoying a superhero-themed afternoon at the game with a chance to win prizes.
“We’re encouraging fans of any age to dress up as their favorite superhero,” said Amber Wise, South Carolina Assistant Director of Marketing. “Marketing staff members will be walking through the stadium to see who is dressed up, and we’ll keep track of people who come up to the marketing table to get BINGO cards or posters. The winner of the best-dressed superhero will win an autographed baseball from Head Coach Chad Holbrook.”
Due to security and safety regulations, masks are not permitted, and props that would interfere with viewing of the game for other fans are not allowed.
Some hand-held props of approved superhero masks will be made available for picture-taking at the marketing kiosk which is located by the entrance at Gate 1 behind home plate. Field emcee Curtis Wilson will be interacting with fans between innings, and crowd reaction to contestants displayed on the videoboard will determine the winner of the best dressed superhero at the end of the fourth inning.
Superhero music will also be played throughout the game. Songs from superhero movies in pre-game, and superhero theme songs will be played between innings. For those who are superstitious, don’t fret. Student-athletes’ walk-up music will still be played as always, so as not to hinder any of the Gamecocks’ superpowers.
Several South Carolina baseball student-athletes helped give life to the themed game thanks to their own admiration of some of the caped crusaders.
“Apparently the team loves superheroes,” Wise said. “Braden (Webb) is a big Batman fan. You have some who are big Spiderman fans too. Others have some other superheroes they really like.
“I’m hoping we get some kids and adults who will dress up.”
