COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of South Carolina baseball team faces in-state rival and 14th-ranked Clemson as part of the Palmetto Series this weekend at three different locations. The Gamecocks and Tigers will face off this Friday (March 2) at 7 p.m. inside Founders Park. That will be the final game of Carolina's 10-game homestand to start the season. The two teams will then play on Saturday afternoon (March 3) as part of the Reedy River Rivalry at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. The series wraps up on Sunday afternoon (March 4) at 2 p.m. at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C.
Friday's game will be streamed on SEC Network Plus with Burch Antley and Kip Bouknight on the call. Sunday's game is streamed on the ACC Network. All three games will be on the IMG Gamecock Radio Network with Derek Scott, Tommy Moody and Kip Bouknight on the call.
Carolina is coming off a 6-4 loss to Furman at Founders Park on Tuesday afternoon.
> The shuttle from the Colonial Life Arena lot will not run for the Clemson game due to the high school basketball tournament at CLA. The only shuttle on Friday will be Key Road.
> The Tigers are coming off a 9-8, 10-inning win over Winthrop on Tuesday night. Kyle Wilkie's walk-off single with one out in the 10th won it for Clemson, who was down 8-4 in the sixth inning. Clemson's eight-game winning streak includes a three-game sweep of Dallas Baptist, who was ranked in the top-25 in most polls at the time. Robert Jolly leads Clemson with a .440 batting average, while Chris Williams has 15 RBI and 13 runs scored. Drew Wharton had a team-best four home runs. On the mound, Sunday starter Jake Higginbotham sports an 0.73 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 12.1 innings pitched.
PROBABLE PITCHING ROTATION
HILL NAMED SEC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
> South Carolina junior pitcher Adam Hill has been named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Feb. 26. Hill was downright dominant in a 7-0 win over Charleston Southern on Friday night. The junior righty set a Founders Park record with 14 strikeouts while not allowing a hit, walk or run to pick up his 11th career win as a Gamecock. He broke the old Founders Park record of 13 punchouts, set by Sam Dyson in 2009. The only base runner to reach off Hill was via a fielding error in the sixth inning. Hill had 100 pitches on the night and had two or more strikeouts in six of the seven frames. This is Hill's second career honor from the SEC. He was named SEC Freshman of the Week on March 14, 2016, after wins over Wofford and Charleston Southern.
TOLBERT STREAKING AT START OF 2018
> Junior LT Tolbert has been the hottest hitter for the Gamecocks this season as the Piedmont, S.C., native is hitting .469 (15-for-32) with a triple, two home runs and eight RBI and has hits in all nine games this season. Tolbert was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a solo home run in the 7-0 win over Charleston Southern on Feb. 23. Tolbert also tripled and drove in a pair in the series finale with the Bucs. Tolbert has a .719 slugging percentage and a .585 on-base percentage this year.
BULLPEN SHINES IN FIRST EIGHT GAMES
> The South Carolina bullpen has a 1.19 ERA and has allowed just 28 hits and nine walks in 37.2 innings pitched after nine games this season. Gage Hinson has pitched five innings of relief, allowing just one hit and a .067 opponent's batting average. TJ Shook has made three appearances with two strikeouts in four innings while John Gilreath struck out four in four innings of relief in the season opener vs. VMI on Feb. 16, then had 3.1 innings of one-hit relief against Charleston Southern (Feb. 25).
SC IN THE SEC LEADERS
> John Gilreath is in a four-way tie for the ERA lead (0.00). LT Tolbert is eight with a .469 batting average, tied for fourth with 15 hits and is tied for fourth with a .585 on-base percentage. Jacob Olson is tied for third with four home runs while Noah Campbell has a pair of triples, which is tied for second in the league. Carlos Cortes is tied for sixth with nine walks. On the mound, Adam Hill is tied for third with 20 strikeouts and is sixth with a .132 opponent's batting average. South Carolina is fourth in the league with a .979 fielding percentage.
